CrossFit Haka

19 Feb 2014

Haka:  a traditional ancestral war crydance or challenge from the Māori people of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment.  The New Zealand rugby team‘s practice of performing a haka before their matches has made the dance more widely known around the world. Henry Heke of CrossFit Hawkes Bay in New Zealand recently wrote a Haka for Jason Khalipa and NorCal CrossFit. The video below was produced and published by CrossFit Inc.

This sacred battle cry has survived the test of history. It deserves respect, honor, and total commitment.  There is absolutely NO ROOM for even a moment’s lack of confidence. It should be performed as a ritual that may even serve to “invoke the Gods”, according to Heke.

You be the judge of NorCal’s Haka. Watch it completely. Be warned, in Khalipa’s euphoric state after nailing a 270lb Snatch in a competition, he makes plentiful use of profanity when recounting his Haka experience.
